NASHVILLE, Tenn. – May 18, 2018 – (PRNews) This morning America learned about the Santa Fe, TX school shooting. As we’re still trying to figure out what happened, numerous calls are being made to “do something.”
A former Special Operations vet has done something.
He, along with others from the Special Operations community, and the Mayday Safety team, have designed and developed a safety solution that incorporates a free safety app that allows schools, organizations, individuals, and families to take control of their own safety and manage emergencies.
When seconds count, first responders are often minutes away.
Department of Homeland Security has determined that the average active school shooter incident lasts 12.5 minutes and the average first responder response time is 18 minutes.
These incidents are filled with chaos and confusion. Students, staff, and first responders don’t always know what is going on, where it is happening, and what they are supposed to do.
The Mayday Safety system provides organization-wide alerts with clear location information and communication. Teachers can immediately lock-down their rooms and check-in as safe or request extra help. First responders can view everyone’s status on a map and get the help to where it is needed.
“Smart phones are ubiquitous,” says Mayday Safety co-founder James West. “The Mayday Safety app leverages a tool that many people already have with them every day. In cases like the Santa Fe school shooting where there was no cell-phone access, our app works over Wi-Fi.”
In other emergencies, 9-1-1 usually doesn’t know your exact location because it wasn’t built to handle the majority of calls from cell-phones.
According to the National Emergency Number Association, “an estimated 240 million 911 calls are made to 9-1-1 in the U.S. each year” and of those, “70 to 80 percent of 911 calls come from wireless devices.”
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has said, “…we estimate that location accuracy improvements…could save approximately 10,210 lives annually…”
The free Mayday Safety app, available this week for iPhones and coming soon for Android devices, provides location information in emergency alerts to those nearby and/or the user’s family member – wherever they are located in the world.
Organizations can choose to enroll in the Mayday Pro plan which provides a dashboard to manage emergencies, users, groups, locations, and also coordinate effective messaging.
One of the co-founders, Ryan Cleckner, a former Special Operations sniper, said, “Taking control of your and your family’s safety should be your number one priority. We’re on our own until first responders arrive.”
